노처녀 틸리(Tillie Schlaine: 캐롤 버넷 분)는 파티에서 만난 피아노를 잘 연주하는 피트(Pete Seltzer: 월터 매튜 분)와 결혼을 하게 된다.
두 사람은 그리 열렬하게 사랑하는 사이는 아니었지만 아이도 낳고 그럭저럭 재미있게 살아간다.
다만 피트와 바람기 때문에 틸리의 마음이 서먹해진다.
그러다 아들 로비가 백혈병으로 1년 밖에 가망이 없다는 진단을 받는다.
많은 충격을 받지만 피트와 틸리는 로비에게 많은 신경을 써주게 된다.
하지만 결국은 숨진다.
피트가 바람을 피게 되고 이들 부부는 조용히 별거 생활에 들어간다.
틸리는 늘 철이 없다고 생각한 피트가 마음이 따뜻한 사람임을 알게 되고 또한 그를 사랑함도 깨닫게 된다.
